Abandoned Grove Initiative

The Abandoned Grove Initiative was developed in 2009 as an incentive to growers to voluntarily remove abandoned, unmanaged citrus groves that can provide harbors for pests and diseases that threaten Florida’s citrus industry, and particularly to slow progression of the devastating citrus greening disease.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services worked with county property appraisers to provide an incentive to owners who removed their abandoned groves by allowing them to maintain their agricultural classification while offering a reduced assessment on the cleared property for up to five years.
