Ag Innovation
Overview
Agriculture is one of Florida’s top industries, with over 47,000 farms supporting 2 million jobs and creating $137 billion in economic impact. Florida’s farmers and ranchers are the backbone of our state — growing our economy, preserving our lands and waters, and feeding our families. With increasing environmental and economic challenges for agriculture, innovation is critical to the industry’s future. Agricultural (Ag) innovation is the process of increasing effectiveness, competitiveness, resilience to shocks, and environmental sustainability, thereby contributing to food security and nutrition, economic development, and sustainable natural resource management.
About AIW
The Ag Innovation Workgroup (AIW) was established in 2019 by Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried, with a mission to examine cutting-edge opportunities for Florida sustainable agribusiness. The workgroup is composed of respected farmers, ranchers, agribusiness value chain partners, academic and technical experts, and government officials.
Housed within the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), AIW functions as a collaborative space to connect industry members with government agencies, academia, associations, investors, and other producers to stimulate innovation in agriculture. The workgroup will also serve as a platform to celebrate and share current innovation successes. FDACS may share data, input, and frameworks for regulatory compliance with workgroup members.
AIW is prohibited from promoting a specific company or product, conducting research to support product registration, or providing direct funding outside of legislative budget.
AIW Mission
The workgroup is tasked with making recommendations to the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture on strategic actions and innovative solutions that support the growth and development of agriculture and ecosystem services throughout the state. AIW is committed to the continued success of our farmers, growers, ranchers, producers, farmworkers, and others in food production while facing the future challenges of the industry.
