Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried called on Governor Ron DeSantis to pull down his executive order banning independently-elected local school officials from requiring students to wear masks. Several school-aged children and more than 25 educators in Florida have died from COVID-19 since the school year began. According to the Florida Education Association, more than 66,000 students across the state have tested positive for COVID-19 since August 1.

“Governor, it’s time. Pull down this executive order – this unconstitutional executive order – and let our school boards do what they were voted to do: represent our parents, represent the children, and create a safe environment for this upcoming school year. Enough is enough, Governor. We need to be working together to protect our children,” Commissioner Fried said this morning after visiting an elementary school in Miami-Dade with school board member Lucia Baez-Geller.
