Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida House appropriations leadership unveiled its latest plans to allocate $6 billion in federal American Rescue Plan stimulus funding, including $500 million to help convert septic systems to sewer, $300 million for Florida Forever land preservation, and $100 million to address Piney Point environmental issues.
Of the environmental spending plans, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, an independently-elected member of the Florida Cabinet, offered the following statement:
“While Florida faces many challenges at this moment in time, putting these funds to work on some of our most pressing environmental issues is a wise decision. With septic tank leakage one of Florida’s top sources of water pollution, and with hundreds of millions of gallons of Piney Point’s toxic wastewater threatening Tampa Bay, cleaning up our waters is an investment in Florida’s future. I fully support the Florida Forever program and preserving our lands for generations to come, and I hope our lawmakers will continue their consideration of FDACS’ Rural and Family Lands conservation program alongside these efforts.”
