Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried and state and local elected officials volunteered on Giving Tuesday at Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
Fried was joined by Second Harvest’s CEO Monique Van Pelt, as well as State Senator Loranne Ausley, State Representative Allison Tant, Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey, Leon County Commissioners Kristin Dozier, Carolyn Cummings and Jimbo Jackson, Leon County Clerk of Court Gwen Marshall, Leon County Superintendent Rocky Hanna, Leon County School Board Members Alva Stripling and Darryl Jones, Public Defender-elect Jessica Yeary, and Tallahassee City Commissioners Jeremy Matlow and Curtis Richardson.
The officials packed 700 bags of Satsuma mandarin oranges, Florida-grown in Jackson and Jefferson Counties. The fruit will be distributed by Second Harvest to families in need throughout North Florida. Approximately 3 million Floridians suffer from chronic hunger, including 850,000 children. Food banks are experiencing record demand this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with food insecurity expected to rise as high as 19 percent in Florida.
